Third edition. 8vo, pp. [xxiv], 555; with fine engraved portrait frontispiece by Vandergucht after Vanloo; a very good copy in contemporary calf, spine with black and gold label (edges slightly chipped). Third edition of Cibber’s autobiography - the first of its kind from the London stage, and a classic of theatrical history. The Apology was first published in 1740, with a second edition following in the same year. Both these editions were published for Cibber himself, but in March 1750 he sold the copyright to Dodsley for £52.10s: Dodsley then added two more pieces, the Short Account taken from his own edition of Old Plays (10 vols, 1744), and the Dialogue from Wright’s Historia Histrionica.
