Puccini, Giacomo
La Bohème, Ricordi, Milan [1896]. PN 99000. 269pp. Blue cloth binding with gilt letters. Spine a little tattered, binding rubbed, score in fine condition. The very rare first edition of the vocal score of La Bohème, variant with the second and third bars in 3/4 time and the rest in real time. Hopkinson 4 A (a). RCM (3.1896). PER (3.1896. B.L. (9.1896). B.N. (9.1896). Fuld: 379. There would be four versions issued of La Bohème, with the extremely rare first edition, perhaps the most sought-after of all opera scores by collectors. This beautiful blue binding in cloth (from the publishers) is appreciably more deluxe than the usual cheap boards which are always cracked, and is the first example we've seen of it in combination with the first edition of La Bohème.

Star Spangled Banner
The Star Spangled Banner. New York, Geib & Co. No. 23 Maiden Lane (1816-17). 4pp. 3rd edition, Muller p 64, Sonneck Plate XXV, Wolfe 8346 (listing ten copies, all in institutions), Filby and Howard p. 135. Contained in a superb leather presentation binding with flag motif. The first printing of "The Star Spangled Banner" was by Carr in Baltimore in 1814. The second, dating from 1817, was in Philadelphia by A. Bacon. The third edition, the first to be printed in New York, was by Geib of Maiden Lane, the firm which had begun as organ builders in New York in 1797. (John Geib built the first organ for New York's famous Grace Church.) All early editions of "The Star Spangled Banner" are of extreme rarity with the first having established a spectacular price of $520,000 at Christies in New York , 2010. This third printing is one of the very few in private hands and to our knowledge is the only one offered on the market in many years.
